Proposal Title: In between Life and Death, 03/29/2008, Photography

Proposal Synopsis: What feelings can be evoked by a Memorial? Memories are layered in our consciousness and play upon our mind. The balance between sun and moon, light and shadow, serenity and fear, harmony and instability is what I tried to reflect in my proposal. The walk between two worlds and circumventing the "Holy Ground" are very familiar and essential to Iraqi experience. The focal point of the Memorial: long gas fireplace with its multiple burners has many meanings: the eternal light, the remembrance of souls, hope, and also Iraqi natural wealth. The path is oriented in East-West direction so that large sculptural forms made of corten steel mesh cast deep shadows at it most of the day. At night these giants seem to move and glow, thanks to bickering gas light. The walkway and the wall which are uncomfortably sloped deepen the experience. Fortunately there is small counterbalancing park surrounded by gorgeous palm trees. It is a place to rest and reflect. The circular Memorial can be circumvented and experienced again and again.

Artist's Biography: I was born and raised in Poland. Upon completion of my architectural education I left the country to experience life in supposedly the greatest democratic nation in the world. I am doing well professionally and I've been lucky to work in several great architectural offices in New York. I love people around me but I am very disappointed with American imperial politics. I hope my entry will express true humanistic spirit in such inhumane occupation.
