Proposal Title: "By wreathes of the sea's making", 11/11/2007, Installation
Proposal Synopsis: I will build an ephemeral memorial on a beach; burial mounds replacing the ranks of military coffins. A rose will be marked on each in recognition of our common humanity and unity; the rose being the national flower of Iraq, Britain and the USA. At the setting of the sun as the tide rises the dead will be taken anonymously to the sea.
I have tested the paint marking techniques and have a group of artists who will help me build and document the memorial. Simultaneous international collaboration would be welcome and a non-denominational service will be held at sunset.
Artist's Biography: I am a multimedia and performance artist native to North East England. I sidestepped a career in the army, to become a teacher working with children with behavioural difficulties. Being an adopted, mixed-race Englishman, existential issues of artifice in identity or society, and interstiality percolate through my work. In 2005, I began my MA at the University of Northumbria, extending traditional sculpting and painting practices into digital video and game modification artworks and installations. As a gamer and educator, I became interested in exploring the interstitial worlds created by play to model contemporary and personal issues.
