Proposal Title: Celebrating Life, 04/06/2008, Mixed media
Proposal Synopsis: The Iraqi war memorial draws inspiration from the concept of continuity of life. Thus, the memorial not only educates people about civilian deaths in the Iraq conflict but also encourages reflection and a respect for life and celebrates life. It acts as a community centre as well.
The plan is elliptical in shape representing the ceaseless movement of the planets in its orbit around the sun. The sun which is the focal point is represented by the fluid form of the tower. Around The central part of this memorial consists the map of Iraq wherein soil from every state is brought and placed. Around the map of Iraq are 50 segments which have soil brought in from the states in the U.S. This is to promote ties between these 2 nations.
There are underground alleys which have one wall dedicated to the names of the deceased civilians and the other wall has a digital screen which makes use of biometric technology and displays the loved oneâ??s name and photograph. The entrances to the underground alleys are from the landscaped area which consists of 26 letters of the English alphabet which indicates the area where the deceased oneâ??s name is.
